June 24, 2018 – Honcho checked in fifth on May 11 when unveiled in a ‘key’ Santa Anita Maiden Special, a race won by ‘TDN Rising Star’ Tijori and one that included two additional next-out maiden breakers.
Making his two-turn and turf debuts, Honcho was 4-1 to graduate when sent a mile on the Santa Anita lawn. Away a bit awkwardly, the chestnut sat off the pace and in the two path into the first turn. Pushed along to pick off foes while widest into the lane, he showed an excellent turn of foot, but plenty of immaturity, in the stretch as he defeated newcomer Oracle of Omaga by a head in what easily could’ve been a larger margin.
A son of Street Boss, Honcho was bred in Ontario by South Point partners James & Janeane Everatt and their daughter Arika Everatt-Meeuse (Shannondoe Farm). He was offered as Hip #234 with South Point Sales at last year’s Keeneland September auction. The colt is the second juvenile winner this month from the Everatt/South Point Sales partnership following 2017 Fasig-Tipton July Yearling grad Subsidiary, a wire-to-wire debut winner at Woodbine on June 2.
Honcho is also one of 13 South Point Sales graduates to find the winner’s circle during the month of June. Among the others is the Everatt-bred three-year-old Hangman, a six-figure South Point Sales yearling who won at second asking on June 14 at Belmont Park.
