Deviant took to the turf emphatically when romping by 7 3/4 lengths to break maiden in the El Joven Stakes in mid-August, and was an overwhelming favorite to stay perfect on the lawn in the September 7 Sunday Silence Stakes.
Unhurried early in third last while saving all the ground, the chestnut crept closer into the home bend before tipping out wide for clear sailing. Under confident Lane Luzzi handling, he struck the front in midstretch and proved too much for his competition from there.
A 2-year-old from the first crop by Champagne Stakes (G1) hero Daredevil, Deviant was selected by agent Frank Alosa at the Keeneland September sale out of the South Point Sales consignment. The hammer price that day was $150,000. The colt was originally purchased by Beckie Cantrell (North Coast Thoroughbreds) from South Point Sales at the 2018 Keeneland January sale for $82,000.

Racing in the colors of Red Lane Thoroughbreds, and trained by Danny Pish, Deviant has now won twice in five starts and will likely be looking at a Graded race next month with an eye on berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Santa Anita.
The winner’s dam, Alkmaar, is a half to Canadian champion 2-year-old colt Hollinger and this year’s two-time New York Stallion S. winner on the grass Rinaldi. She produced a full-sister to Deviant last year before returning to Daredevil for 2020.
Both Alkmaar and Deviant’s weanling full-sister will be offered by South Point Sales at the Keeneland November sale.
