March 19, 2018 – South Point Sales grad Sutton Impact continued his winter hot streak at Oaklawn Park, speeding to a third consecutive wire-to-wire victory. The win came in a 7 furlong Allowance/Optional Claiming contest.
Favored at even money, the son Tizway was bumped at the break but recovered quickly to gain the early lead. He then clicked off fractions of :21.97, :45.10 and :57.40 to open up a 5-length advantage turning for home. With steady guidance from rider David Cohen, Sutton Impact cruised the wire a length in front of Long Station, stopping the clock in 1:10 flat.
Sutton Impact was sold by South Point for $45,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling auction. He hasn’t had a horse in front of him in 2018. In his seasonal debut on January 13 the gelding broke on top and dominated by 6 3/4 lengths. His follow up was a wire-to-wire score by 1 3/4 lengths over Allowance foes on February 3. The final time of that performance (1:09.89) was just .04 seconds off the clocking for the $125,000 King Cotton Stakes that same afternoon at Oaklawn.
Racing in the colors of M & M Racing, Sutton Impact’s ledger now stands at 4 wins from 9 starts and earnings of $141,909. He was bred by Felicia & Doug Branham.
South Point Sales graduates have now found the winner’s circle 17 times in 2018.
